Valentine’s Day is coming up. Most couples or lovers will rush to popular restaurants where they will inevitably wait in line for hours. Instead of having normal dating, explore some hidden gems to add some spice to your own secret time. As a half-Californian, here are four places that I recommend to opt for instead this Valentine’s Day.
Northern California:
- Mendocino – Cali magical ride and stargazing on moonlight Railbike

Where it is: 100 miles north of Santa Rosa
Mendocino is an amazing gateway on California’s romantic North Coast. The red roof and white lighthouse near the coastline create a distinctive landscape at the Point Cabrillo Nature Preserve, which is a wonderful place for a hike, whale watching, and a picnic. Don’t forget to take the world-famous Skunk Train to enjoy a magical ride like heading to Hogwarts. Also, hop on an incredible two-person, electric-assisted moonlight Railbike and make your way through the redwoods to California’s most unique hidden bars. While you are cycling, you also have a chance to spot sparkling stars and nebula clusters on a clear romantic spring night.
- Sonoma – wonderful wine-tasting and hot-air balloon experiences

Where it is: 68 miles southwest of Sacramento
Maybe you are craving for food, wine and souvenirs. Sonoma will make you discover unique, immersive natural activities and unexpected cultural experiences. By wandering in small towns, along with visiting the European-style wineries and vintage stores, you and your partner can get a rejuvenating and relaxing tour. Also, there’s only a 30-minute drive to Napa Valley, which gives you an open atmosphere to enjoy the breathtaking views on their balloon ride. You can also enjoy hot air ballooning. Shout out to your love at the hot air balloon.
Southern California:
- Salt-Creek Beach Park – Under-the-radar beach

Where it is: 12 min drive from Laguna Beach
If you are tired of looking for a parking spot and standing with dozens of people to watch the sunset, Salt-Creek Beach Park is a low-key place away from crowds for outdoor lovers to have their own special time. Besides some popular beaches like Santa Barbara Beach and Laguna Beach, Salt-Creek Beach provides you with opportunities to enjoy natural activities like surfing and swimming, along with walking areas. In addition, it’s only a five-minute drive to Dana Point, where you can hold your lover’s hand and enjoy the waterfront walk.
- Descanso Garden

Where it is: 6 miles north of Glendale, 20 minutes from Downtown LA
When it comes to Valentine’s Day, flowers are always associated with this special day. At the Descanso Garden, take your time escaping from the urban buzz and feeling the romance of spring by visiting the Camellia collection and exploring paths and trails with your lover. Early spring is the perfect blooming season of camellia and also where the season ends. Camellia symbolizes love, adoration and longing. Seize the precious chance to view dazzling floral displays with your partner to show your love to each other.
